Elderberry: Nature's Immune-Boosting Superstar

Stay Healthy!

As an herbalist, I really appreciate the humble elderberry. This small, dark berry, known scientifically as Sambucus nigra, has been a staple in traditional practices for centuries. Its deep, rich color hints at its amazing health benefits, which play a big role in keeping us feeling our best.

When cold and flu symptoms show up some folks often resort to over-the-counter medicines.  What they fail to realize is that these medicines suppress the immune system while elderberries aid and support our own natural defenses.  They’re packed with vitamins A, B, and C, along with flavonoids that help give our immune system a boost. Research shows that the elderberry can help shorten the duration and severity of colds and flu, thanks to its natural supportive properties. Elderberries also contain natural pigments that not only give them their beautiful color but also help the body’s immune response by increasing the production of proteins that manage immune reactions.

Elderberries are incredibly versatile and I keep them in my home apothecary year-round. You can use them in syrups, teas, and tinctures, making it easy to fit them into your daily routine. Elderberry syrup is a favorite of mine, especially during cold and flu season. It’s simple to make at home by simmering the berries with honey and spices like cinnamon, ginger and cloves. There are so many recipes if you’d like to make elderberry syrup at home the combinations are endless.  This sweet, tangy syrup can be taken daily as a preventative measure (add a spoonful to a glass of water or sparkling water) or increase the amount when you feel a cold or flu coming on (a spoonful every 30 to 60 minutes) to help fend off infection more quickly.

Honey is often the sweetener of choice for elderberry syrup. However, honey, even with its own healing properties, is not suitable for children under 2 years old.  Their systems just can’t handle it.  Use an alternative when making a syrup young children will consume.

Elderberry isn’t just about boosting your immune system. It also has properties that can help protect against chronic issues and support overall health. So, whether you’re trying to keep a cold at bay or just want to enhance your body’s natural defenses, elderberry is a fantastic choice. Embrace this age-old remedy and let nature’s bounty help keep you healthy and strong.

Cautions!

There are a few precautions to note when considering using elderberry.  While elderberry is generally safe for most people, it’s important to know about potential side effects and precautions. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1.      Raw Elderberries: Always cook elderberries thoroughly before eating them. Raw elderberries and other parts of the plant can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

2.      Allergic Reactions: Some folks might be allergic to elderberry. Watch out for symptoms like a rash, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue. If this happens, stop using elderberry and get medical help.

3.      Autoimmune Diseases: If you have an autoimmune condition, like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, consult with your healthcare provider before using elderberry since it can stimulate the immune system.

4.      Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: There isn’t much research on the safety of elderberry during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It’s best to avoid it or talk to your healthcare provider first.

5.      Drug Interactions: If you’re on prescription medications, check with your healthcare provider before adding elderberry to your routine to avoid any interactions.

6.      Dosage and Duration: Stick to recommended doses and don’t use elderberry for long periods without medical supervision.
